Mamata’s aide held on return from Dhaka

Shibaji Panjabusinessman and film producer Shibaji Panja, who accompanied eastern Indian state of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on her three-day Bangladesh visit, was detained at the airport here by a Delhi Police team in connection with a fraud case.
Shibaji Panja was arrested on Saturday night soon after his arrival from Dhaka. A look-out notice was issued by the Delhi police on February 19 in an economic offence case. “Four days ago a look out notice was issued for Panja at all the airports. Our
investigating officer will now go to Kolkata and then he will be formally arrested and brought to Delhi for questioning,” DCP (EOW) B K Singh
Panja had allegedly taken a Rs.18 crore loan from Industrial Financial Corporation, a government organisation which lends short term loans to firms, after submitting some fake documents. Panja is one of those prominent businessmen in Kolkata who is extremely close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Over the past few years he has often been seen around the CM at various programmes.
Panja was detained at the airport’s immigration counter, and soon handed over to the airport police station. A team of Delhi Police will take charge of Panja. He is presently admitted in the Bidhannagar hospital after he complained of illness. A small time businessman, Panja has business interests in television channels. He is also a member of the Kolkata International Film Festival committee which organises Mamata’s pet programme every year
He is also believed to be one of main organisers of exhibitions of chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s paintings. Panja, who co-produced the detective film ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’ in 2010, had left for Dhaka along with the Chief Minister on February 19.
