More than 3,200 undocumented Bangladesh nationals residing in the Maldives illegally were sent back home so far after the tiny island nation began a government-initiated evacuation process of undocumented workers, reports Raajji.mv, a Maldives based news portal on Saturday.
In a publication on Saturday, the ministry of foreign affairs of Maldives revealed that a total of 3,269 undocumented Bangladeshi workers were sent back home till the day.
187 undocumented Bangladeshi workers were repatriated on Saturday alone, the report said.
The workers were sent back to Bangladesh through a Dhaka-bound flight of Maldivian national airline.
Maldives president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, while addressing the nation during COVID-19 crisis in May, announced that over 1,500 undocumented migrant workers would be repatriated from the country.
After the announcement, the ministry of foreign affairs and ministry of economic development of the country began collaborating to repatriate the thousands of undocumented Bangladeshi nationals.
The report said Bangladeshi workers in Maldives were living in congested places in large groups and because of their lifestyle they had been classified as vulnerable to coronavirus infection.
