Staff Reporter :
Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Imran Ahmad said on Sunday that the Malaysian labour market would be open for Bangladeshi manpower after ensuring low migration costs.
“Without ensuring low migration cost, I will not open Malaysian labour market. Previously we saw that our labourers are hiding in Malaysia’s forests after going there costing four to six lakh taka. It will not happen any more,” the Minister said it while addressing a meet the press programme in the Ministry.
The Minister said that the government will not tolerate any irregularities on sending manpower abroad.
“The government will take punitive actions against those recruiting agencies who involve in irregularities. Because, if the recruiting agencies are not punished for their illegal activities, they will do it repeatedly,” the Minister said.
The Minister mentioned that illegal activities by the manpower brokers have led to the suspension of some labour markets in many countries including Malaysia and UAE.
Many migrants also become undocumented and that
becomes a major challenge for the government to open the suspended labour markets, the minister said.
The Minister also said that the government has taken some measures to ensure safety of female workers abroad.
He said that about half of the migrant females are either divorcees or widows.
Imran Ahmed said that the demands in the manpower recruiting countries are changed.
They now want skilled workers. There are shortage of training centers in our country, so we cannot provide numbers of skilled workers as per the demand, he added.
Besides, the Secretary of the Ministry Salim Reza said that about 7.5 lakh workers will go abroad this year.
He said also that about 7.01 lakh workers has gone abroad in 2019.
