Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) officials detained a Malaysian national along with 10 gold bars at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka early Sunday.
The detained man was identified as Looi Koon Hong, 33, a Malaysian citizen of Chinese origin. He reached Dhaka from Kuala Lumpur by Malindo Air flight OD-162 at around 1:00am.
“He (Hong) tried to leave the green channel area hastily dodging scanning. We challenged him and found the gold bars hidden inside his shoes,” said director general of customs intelligence Md Shahidul Islam.
On secret information, a team of CIID took position earlier at the green channel of the airport
They seized four gold bars, weighing 1kg each and six gold bars, weighing 1.48kg, worth about Tk 2.74 crore, from the shoes of Hong.
A case was filed in this regard under the customs act.
