Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), the export promotion agency of Malaysia, has assured Bangladesh of providing all-out support for expanding business ties between the two friendly countries.
To further promote bilateral trade between Malaysia and Bangladesh, MATRADE in cooperation of the Bangladesh Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BMCCI) organised the ‘Export Acceleration Mission (EAM) to Dhaka’ from November 11-12 here with a delegation of 15 Malaysian companies. Marking the EMA, a seminar on “Doing Business in Bangladesh” was held on Sunday at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in the city. Trade Commissioner of the MATRADE Chennai Muzzafar Shah Hanafi presented a brief on the seminar while MATRADE Delegation Leader M Shaiful M Sharif delivered the opening address.
Malaysian High Commissioner in Dhaka Nur Ashikin Mohd Taib and BMCCI Vice President Syed Sadat Almas Kabir, among others, spoke. Muzzafar said the objective of this mission is to create a platform for Malaysian companies to explore business opportunities in Bangladesh. “This mission is also aimed to give Malaysian companies the opportunity to evaluate their industry’s market potential apart from making business deals with Bangladesh companies,” he added.
Taib urged the Malaysian companies and businessmen to invest more in Bangladesh as there is an investment-friendly environment here. In 2017, total bilateral trade between Malaysia and Bangladesh was US$1.87 billion. Malaysia’s total export to Bangladesh stood at US$ 1.63 billion and Malaysia’s imports from Bangladesh in 2017 recorded an increase of 20.5 percent to $US 89.5 million from US$ 57.6 million in 2014. From January to September in 2018, Malaysia’s total bilateral trade with Bangladesh was US$ 1.83 billion, an increase of 51.9 percent from US$ 1.2 billion in the same period of 2017.
Malaysia’s major exports to Bangladesh for Jan-Sept 2018 were Petroleum products, palm oil, chemical products, manufacturing metals and machinery equipment and parts, which contribute to about 78 percent of Malaysia’s total export to Bangladesh.
