Major political parties, including Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party, have sought further time from the Election Commission to submit their financial statements for 2013.
Out of 40 registered political parties, 26 have submitted their audit statements to the commission within the July-31 deadline.
Election Commissioner Shah Nawaz on Sunday told the reporters that the decision over the time petitions of political parties will be taken in the commission’s meeting within a couple of days.
Awami League sought time till September 1, while BNP till August 14 and Jatiya Party till August 30 to place their audit reports.
According to the Political Parties Registration Rules 2008, a party has to get its total transactions on a calendar year audited by a chartered accounting firm and submit a copy of the firm’s report to the commission by July 31 of the subsequent year.
The 14 parties that sought more time also include ASM Abdur Rob-led Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD, Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal, Bangladesh Nationalist Front-BNF, Bangladesh Jatiya Party-BJP, Gano Forum, Bikalpadhara Bangladesh, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, Bangladesh Muslim League, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, National People’s Party and Gano Front.
The 26 parties that submitted their audit reports before July 31 are Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod, Communist Party of Bangladesh-CPB, Workers Party of Bangladesh, Oikyabaddha Nagarik Andolan, Jatiya Party-JP, Islamic Front Bangladesh, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (Matin), Islamic Oikya Jote, Jamiyat-e-Ulama Bangladesh,
Islami Andolon Bangla-desh, Bangladesh National Awami Party-Bangladesh NAP, Bangladesh Kalyan Party, Liberal Democratic Party-LDP, Jatiya Ganotantrik Party-Jagpa, Khelafat Majlish, Bangladesh Muslim League-BML, Bangladesh National Awami Party-NAP, Ganotantri Party, Zaker Party, Bangladesh Tariqat Federation, Bangladesh Biplobi Workers’ Party, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal-Basad, Krishak Shramik Janata League, Pragotisheel Ganotantrik Dal (Progressive Democratic Party), Bangladesh Islami Front and Bangladesh Sanskritik Muktijote.
As per the article 90H (1)© of the Representation of the People Order, the registration of a political party may be cancelled if it fails to submit the audit report in time for three consecutive years.
