Harvesting of maize is going on in full swing across Rangpur agriculture region and the farmers are delighted to witness a good yield of their produce. Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said maize was cultivated on around 109,633 hectares of land this season with a production target 8.97 lakh tonnes of grain in five districts of Rangpur agriculture zone.
The districts are: Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari and Gaibandha.
Visiting the maize fields in different areas under the region, this correspondent found the farmers and farm labourers passing busy time reaping and gathering the maize from morning to night.
Presently the crop is being sold at Tk 540 to Tk 580 per maund which is not so satisfactory to the growers. Farmers also hoped that its price would go up within next month. Many farmers are yet to sell their produce to get more profit later.
Nazrul Mia, a farmer at Char Nazirdaho village under Kawnia upazila in Rangpur, said that he brought 2.15 bigha of land under cultivation of maize this season, spending around Tk 11,000. He got 60 maunds of grain which he has sold at Tk 28,000. DAE official sources said the department provided the farmers with logistic support including fertilisers and other necessary agri-inputs during the time of cultivation in order to enhance maize production.
BSS from Manikganj adds: The maize cultivators achieved bumper production in the district. The harvesting of Maize in seven Upazilas of the district would complete soon. Cultivators are passing their busy time to collect their crop.
