Satisfactory price and huge demand of maize in the country as well as abroad are encouraging the farmers in Rangpur division to grow more maize in their fields.
According to sources maize production has increased this year about 7,000 hectares of land in Rangpur division and due to congenial weather the farmers are expecting a bumper production of maize during the current season in the region.
The DAE has fixed a target of producing 6,95,168 tonnes of maize from 97,911 hectares of land this year in 8 districts under Rangpur division which is about 7,000 hectares higher than that of last year. Maize was cultivated in 90,910 hectares of land in Rangpur division last year.
DAE sources said like in the mainland, the landless and river eroded char people have also brought more sandy char lands under maize farming this year than the previous years.
It is learnt that maize corn is mainly used for poultry, fish and cattle feed therefore, its demand is rising gradually.
Ramzan Ali, a corn cultivator of Bhurarghat Area under Rangpur Sadar upazila said that he cultivated maize in 5 bighas of land this year and he is optimistic about achieving a bumper output of the crop, he added.
Deputy Director of DAE Rangpur Golam Shobhani said farmers are getting more profits by cultivating maize than wheat or Boro, as a result the cultivation of maize is increasing day by day in the region, he added.
