The enthusiastic farmers have been continuing cultivation of maize in four districts under Sylhet region during the current Rabi season.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, target of maize from four hectares of land have been fixed for the region this season.
The farmers have so far brought 4 hectares of land or 68.27 per cent of the targeted land area under maize cultivation in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulobibazar and Habiganj districts in the region.
Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Sylhet told that the farmers had been showing more interest in maize cultivation after getting repeated bumper production and lucrative price in recent years.
Cultivation of maize has already become popular in the region and contributing largely to the economy, he said.
He added, the char and riverside people have been farming maize in more land this season as they earned huge profits in recent years through farming the cash crops in their sandy and barren char lands.
Rumen , a successful farmer of Guainghat Upazila, said he got 280 maunds of maize through cultivating it on 3 bighas of land last year.
He earned Tk 1, 46,400 through selling the crop in local markets while he spent only Tk 80, 000, he said.
Senior Scientific officer of BARI D. Mahmudul islam Nazrul told that predicted bumper maize output this season in the region following various government initiatives.
Enhancing cultivation of low-irrigation consuming cereal crops like maize and wheat instead of Boro farming would save huge underground water, he said.
Sylhet Regional Additional Director of DAE Altabur Rahman said that maize cultivation had been increasing every year and benefiting the farmers including the poor people.
 Necessary measures had been taken to ensure the supply of fertilizer, pesticide and other agri-inputs to the growers to make the maize farming a grand success in the district during the current season, he added.
