Imprisoned former adviser of the caretaker government Barrister Mainul Hosein was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) on Saturday for a medical check-up in line with a High Court directive.
A five-member medical board led by Prof Debendranath Sarkar, chief of the Medicine Department of RMCH, examined Barrister Mainul’s health condition. The board also suggested his several medical tests at the hospital.
“After nearly two hours of health check-up, he was taken back to the Rangpur jail again,” jailer Amjad Hossain Don told The New Nation.
He said, “Mainul Hosein was taken to the RMCH at around 9.00am for health-check up. He was taken to the hospital under tight security. He was brought back to jail again at around 10.30am.”
The Jailer said that report of his (Mainul) medical tests would be sent to the Court tomorrow (Sunday) as per its directive.
The High Court on Thursday asked the authorities concerned of Rangpur jail and RMCH for conducting health check-up of Barrister Mainul Hosein and submit the report by Sunday next.
An HC bench of Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir passed the order following two writ petitions filed earlier by Mainul’s wife Saju Hossein.
It also asked authorities to provide adequate security to Mainul if he is transferred to another jail from Rangpur jail.
On November 3, Barrister Mainul Hosein was transferred to Rangpur jail from Dhaka central jail to produce him before the Rangpur Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in a defamation case. Judge Arifa Yasmin Mukta of the court on the following day rejected Mainul’s bail petition when he was produced before the court for hearing of the case. Later, the court ordered to send him to Rangpur jail again fixing November 22 for next hearing in the case.
When asked, RMCH Director Ajay Kumar said, a five-member medical team led by Prof Debendranath Sarker examined his health condition yesterday. The medical team primarily found Barrister Mainul stable.
“The team suggested for some medical examinations and pathological tests to ascertain his (Barrister Mainul’s) health condition properly. The report will be available tomorrow (Sunday). Details will be given if we receive the report. But in the meantime, I think he is apparently in good health,” said the RMCH Director.
He also said that reports of his medical tests will be sent to the jail authorities tomorrow (Sunday).
On October 22, a team of Detective Branch police arrested Barrister Mainul Hosein from the house of JSD leader ASM Abdur Rab at Uttara in Dhaka after an arrest warrant issued against him in connection with a defamation suit filed against him by human rights activist Mili Maya with the Rangpur Chief Judicial Magistrate court for hurling abusive words at journalist Masuda Bhatti during a live TV talk show.
Later, 21 more cases have been filed across the country against him over the same charges.
