BSS, Dhaak :
The main work on the much-awaited Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) would start in September this year, Science and Technology Minister Architect Yeafesh Osman said. “Our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will lay the foundation stone of the main construction work on Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in the middle of September this year,” he told the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday while responding to a supplementary from BNF member Abul Kalam Azad.
The minister said the first phase construction of the plant has already been finished, adding, “Bangladesh would be the 33rd country having nuclear power plant after construction of the Rooppur plant.” Giving details on Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, Osman informed the House that the power plant was scheduled to be built at Rooppur in northern Bangladesh in 1962.
But the then Pakistan government shifted it to Karachi, he said, adding, “After independence Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman felt necessity to construct the plant at Rooppur.
The minister said in 1996, Awami League government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina assumed power and the PM expressed her interest to materialize Bangabahdu’s dream through constructing the plant. He said after the assassination of Bangabandhu no subsequent governments showed their interest in the construction of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.
“But our honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina communicated Russia for installation of the plant and they agreed to it,” Osman said.
