Police on Tuesday recaptured Rafsan Hossain Rubel, the prime accused in a case filed for gang-raping a Garo woman, from the city’s Badda area.
Earlier on Saturday when sub-inspector Imran and constable Dipak Chandra of Badda Police Station took Rubel, son of Mafij Uddin Miah, to Dhaka court for recording his confessional statement, he managed a good escape from their custody on that day.
“A special squad of detective branch (DB) of police recaptured Rubel from in front of Suvastu Tower at Uttar Badda in the city on Tuesday morning, three days after his escape from the police custody,” SM Mostaq Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner of Gulshan Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) told journalists yesterday.
He added the detective police rearrested him while trying to board a Tongi bound passenger bus at about 9:30 am.
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court placed Rubel on a six-day remand.
Metropolitan Magistrate Sabbir Yeasir Ahsan Chowdhury passed the order when the officer-in-charge of Badda Police Station, also the investigation officer of the case, produced him before the court with a 10-day remand prayer.
On November 11 members of elite force Rapid Action Battalion arrested Rubel, from the Airport Railway Station area of the capital and later handed over him to Badda Police on the next day. The police official said after fleeing from the court, Rubel stayed at a mosque near court until nightfall as police, who were already on alert throughout the Old Dhaka court premises and adjacent areas along with Dhaka city, were searching frantically for him.
Rubel also offered prayers and thanked the Allah first as he managed a good escape from police custody inside the courtroom.
In order to hide the handcuffs Rubel wrapped a bandage so that people would think he received wounds.
He spoke to nobody and walked out the court premises silently. Next, he realised he needed money.
He later phoned one of his relatives and received Tk 1,000 through bKash transfer. Nobody in the mosque doubted about him as his arm seemed broken and bandaged, according to the DC. He came out of the mosque after dusk and had a cup of tea and a cigarette. Moving on, he first went to Gulistan via bus and later to Badda. He did not make contact with any of his friends.
Alone and hungry, Rubel went to a nearby playground in Badda on Sunday night. Following the day, nothing was different for Rubel as he could not get his cuffs off and police were looking for him everywhere. He thought he had to leave Dhaka.
After having breakfast with a piece of cake and a soft drink, Rubel started heading towards Tongi.
Police, however, were aware of his habits and received information that he was in the Badda area. Throughout the night, uniform and plainclothes were looking for him.
Tuesday morning, Rubel was still undecided as to how to get the cuffs off his hand. But again, he changed his mind and tried to escape from the area.
The Garo woman, a resident of Khilkhet area in the capital who used to work at a beauty parlour, was gang-raped on October 25 last by four youths while returning home from her workplace.
Later, she filed a complaint with the police station on October 28.Airport
According to the case statement, the victim was raped in Badda on October 25 while visiting her betrothed, one Ripon Mrong, at a mess in Misritola located in North Badda.
The manager of the mess asked Ripon to leave the mess since he had violated rules by bringing a woman there.
A mess resident Salauddin, intimidated the couple with local goons – Rubel, Rony, Sumon, Nazmul and some others who were called to come over.
Rubel, Salauddin and Al Amin tried to rape the girl in a nearby rickshaw garage but as it was full of people they dragged her to an abandoned house near the garage and raped her there instead.
Badda Police SI Imranul Haque and constable Dipok have been suspended for the negligence of duty over the incident.
