A court here on Monday granted bail to the Daily Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman in a defamation case for his alleged degrading remarks about the country’s independence and sovereignty and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family.

Md Ziaul Hasan Chowdhury Shohag, former vice-president of district unit Bangladesh Chhatra League, filed a Tk. 1,000 crore defamation case with the Comilla Judicial Magistrate Court-1 on December 12 last year.
According to the case statements, Mahmudur Rahman at a programme at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital on December 1 had allegedly claimed that Bangladesh is not an independent country as it has no sovereignty although it has land and population.
He allegedly had demanded that the mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman should not be on the premise of the Jatiya Press Club.
