Defamation case: Mahmudur gets bail for 6 weeks

The High Court on Sunday granted anticipatory bail for six weeks to Amar Desh acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman in a defamation case filed for “demeaning” Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice SM Mozibur Rahman passed the order upon a petition filed by Mahmudur seeking
anticipatory bail in the case. Mahmudur Rahman, who was attacked on Kushtia court premises after he secured bail in another defamation case on July 22, appeared before the HC bench on Sunday for bail in the case.
Nazmul Haque Kiron, a local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League in Sunamganj, filed the case with Sunamganj Model Police Station on December 14 last year accusing Mahmudur for making “derogatory remarks” about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The acting editor made the comments on December 1 last year while addressing a seminar on restoration of democracy and the role of media, organised by Bangladesh Democratic Council at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
On July 26, a Sunamganj court issued arrest warrant against Mahmudur, who is known as a pro-BNP intellectual, in the case, Barrister Tanvir Ahmed Al-Amin, a lawyer for Mahmudur told journalists.
He said that around 35 cases had been filed against Mahmudur Rahman in different districts across the country for making “derogatory remarks” about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Bashir Ullah said, the government will move an appeal in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against the HC order that granted bail to Mahmudur Rahman.
