BSS, Dhaka :
In-form batsman Mahmudullah Riyad saw his 2nd consecutive century in the ICC World Cup went in vain as co-host New Zealand registered a hard fought three wicket win over Bangladesh’s last pool A match on Friday at the Seddon Park in Hamilton, New Zealand.
This win enabled Kiwis to finish the first phase in a grand style by remaining unbeaten in all six pool a matches while Bangladesh after this narrow defeat had to remain satisfied at fourth position in their group. They will now face defending champions India in their quarterfinal on March 16 in Melbourne.
Mahmudullah Riyad rode his luck as he was floored by Cory Anderson in the slips on 1 and he made Kiwis pay dearly for that drop catch.
As the saying goes that fortune favours the brave, Mahmudullah too grabbed the opportunity to remain unbeaten on 128. His impressive century came off 111 deliveries including eight fours and two delighted sixes along with a strike rate of 90.09. He finally remained unbeaten by notching his career best 128 runs off 123-ball with the help of 12 boundaries and three over boundaries.
Mahmudullah, combining with Soumya Sarkar (51) added 90 for the third wicket and again Sabbir Rahman (40) for a quick-fire 78 runs for the sixth wicket partnership to help Bangladesh to challenging total of 288 for 7.
Riyad, who in the previous match became the first ever Bangladesh player for recording a century in the Cricket World Cup today added more coveted to his personal milestone as hammered his second consecutive century in this World Cup. He also became the 7th batsmen in the world scoring 2nd consecutive century in the ICC World Cup. Shahriar Nafees is the only Bangladesh batsman who hit two successive ODI centuries, against Zimbabwe in 2006.
Earlier on March 9, the 29-year-old scored Bangladesh’s maiden World Cup century against England in their last match at Adelaide on Monday last.
Mahmudllah also wrote his name in the elite panel of this year’s World Cup’s leading top five scorers. Sri Lanka’s Sangakara lead the pack, South Africa’s DeVilliers in the second spot, Lankan Dilshan in the third position while Mahmudullah surpassed India’s prolific opener Shekhar Dhavan for the fourth spot with Indian opener at the 5th position.
