Magistrate on leave amid massive protest by lawyers

A Dhaka magistrate went on a two-day leave on Wednesday amid massive protests after lawyers demonstrated and demanded his withdrawal.
Sources said Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Asaduzzaman Nur went on a two-day casual leave following the incident.
The decision was taken
 after a meeting between Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate AM Zulfikar Hayat and the leaders of the Dhaka Bar Association.
They also decided that a petition would be sent to the Law Ministry for the withdrawal of the magistrate from the court. After the meeting, the agitated lawyers called off their protests at 12:30pm.
Dhaka Bar Association President Md Iqbal Hossain said: “The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate informed us that the magistrate had been sent on a two-day leave and all activities of his court would be suspended temporarily until further notice.”
CMM Court Administrative Official Mahabubul Alam said: “The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Muhammad Asaduzzaman Nur, has taken a two-day casual leave. The court proceedings are going on normally.”
Earlier in the morning, around 500 lawyers of Dhaka Bar Association started demonstrating in front of the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) Court at 10:30am demanding immediate the withdrawal of the magistrate over his keeping a lawyer in the dock for two hours on Tuesday. All judicial activities at the CMM court came to a halt due to the lawyers’ protest. The main gate of the court was locked by the protesters and no one was allowed to enter the court building.
Earlier on Tuesday, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammadd Asaduzzaman Nur was supposed to sit at the court around 10:30am. As he was late, lawyer Mohammad Rubel Ahmed Bhuiyan became agitated and asked the bench assistant the exact time when the magistrate was going to appear.
When the the court sat at around 12:00pm, Muhammad Asaduzzaman Nur wanted to know why the lawyer had become agitated. After hearing of the matter, the magistrate kept the lawyer in the dock for two hours.
Later, the lawyer Rubel submitted a written complaint to the general secretary of Dhaka Bar Association and demanded justice over the incident.
