Madrasa teachers call off strike after govt assurance

Ebtedayee madrasa teachers on Tuesday called off their indefinite hunger strike unto death after getting government’s assurance to meet their demands.
They ended their hunger strike around 2:15pm after Technical and Madrasa Education Division Secretary Mohammad Alamgir informed them that the government is sincere to meet their demand.
“The government is working on the issue,” he said adding that their demand will be placed to the prime minister soon.
Earlier on the day Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid and State Minister for Technical and Madrasa Education Division Kazi Keramat Ali met Finance Minister AMA Muhith over the issue.
Muhith sought information related to funding needs for the nationalization of madrasa teachers.
“We’ll send the information within two to three days,” said Mohammad Alamgir.
“We have called off the hunger strike following assurance from the government high-ups,” said Qazi Ruhul Amin Chowdhury, President of Bangladesh Independent Ebtedayee Madrasa Teachers’ Association.
He said they want an announcement before the next budget in this reagrd.
 Ebtedayee madrasa teachers started their hunger strike on January 9 in front of the Jatiya Press Club demanding nationalisation of all primary level madrasas under the Bangladesh Madrassah Education Board.
