Staff Reporter :Noted lyricist Gobinda Halder, who rendered many historic songs during the Liberation War of Bangladesh, is no more. He was 84. He passed away on Saturday while undergoing treatment at Jitendra Nath Roy Hospital in Kolkata at 10:20am (local time). He was being treated at the hospital for old age and kidney complications for the last two months.President Md Abdul Hamid, who had visited the ailing lyricist during his visit to India in December, expressed condolences over his death.Gobinda Halder composed scores of immortal songs like ‘Mora Ekti Ful Ke Bachabo Boley Juddho Kori,’ ‘Ek Sagor Rokter Binimoye Banglar Swadhinata Anlo Jara,’ ‘Purbo Digontey Surjo Uthechhey Rokto Lal Rokto Lal,’ and ‘Padma Meghna Jamuna, Tomar Aamar Thikana.’When Swadhin Bangla Betar was desperately looking inspirational songs for the Freedom Fighters during the early months of the Liberation War, Gobinda Halder came up with new lyrics appropriate for moment.Gobinda Halder had also penned nearly 3,500 semi-classical, folk, Baul, Kirtan, Shyama Sangeet and modern Bengali songs before glaucoma claimed his sight and ended his writing capacity.
