Dr Varun Shetty, consultant cardiac surgeon of Narayana Health, India said on Friday that Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) is an alternative to heart transplants that help patients to lead a normal life and free from heart failure.
“We are happy to provide an alternative like LVAD to heart failure patients that can help them to recover and lead a normal life,” Dr Varun said as the chief guest at a press conference at Jatiya Press Club in the city.
Narayana Health Liaison Office in Dhaka organised the programme.
LVAD is an implantable pump which takes blood from the left side of the heart and pumps it into the body, thereby allowing the heart to recover.
“At the very beginning, Narayan Health implanted the first LVAD in 11 years back. From then, we have implanted 17 devices, currently we are implementing the HeartMate two devices,” Varun Shetty said, adding that Narayan Health is the only hospital in Bangalore with a regular LVAD programme.
