UNB, Dhaka :
Though there is no visible initiative to trace BNP organising secretary M Ilias Ali who went missing just three years back, his wife Tahsina Rushdir Luna is still hopeful of his return.
“I had met the head of the government and she promised to look into the matter with importance. Though we haven’t seen the fulfilment of the
Prime Minister’s promise, I hope she’ll reconsider it with due importance and I’ll get my husband back,” she said.
A dejected Luna voiced her hope when a group of BNP leaders, led by its international affairs secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon, met her on Friday at her Banani residence commemorating the day of Ilias’ disappearance.
Luna said she thinks Ilias is still alive and he will return to her if the government sincerely tries to rescue him.
The BNP delegation conveyed the party chairperson’s sympathy as Ilias could not be rescued or traced even after three years of his reported enforced disappearance.
On April 17, 2012, former BNP MP Ilias was picked up allegedly by some plainclothes men along with his car driver Ansar Ali from the capital’s Banani area, but it is still not clear whether he is dead or alive. There has been no visible progress in the investigation by law enforcers to unearth the mystery over the BNP leader’s disappearance, the BNP leaders said.
BNP has been claiming since his disappearance that the law enforcers at the behest of the government picked Ilias up, an allegation vehemently rejected by the government.
Ripon said the day is a very painful for Ilias’ family as well as for BNP. “We always feel his absence and his party post is still vacant. This day will be considered as a stigmatised in Bangladesh history.”
Referring to BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed who also went missing from a residence at Uttara in Dhaka on March 10, Ripon said a dangerous trend has got introduced in Bangladesh’s political culture with the enforced disappearances of Salahuddin and Ilias Ali.
Mentioning that the culture of intimidation in politics is not good for democracy, he said it is their wrong idea those who think they will be able to cling to power through intimidation and repression.
He hoped that the government will try to rescue Ilias Ali to materialise the promise of the Prime Minister she has given Luna.
The BNP delegation went to Ilias’ residence, ‘Sylhet House’, around 4:50pm and stayed there for a long time.
They talked to Luna and her family members and enquired about their present condition.
