Woman entrepreneur Luna Shamsuddoha has been appointed chairman of the Janata Bank, becoming the first woman in Bangladesh to head a state-owned bank.
She had been working as a director of the bank since 2016.
Manik Chandra Dey, an Additional Secretary at the Financial Institutions Division and a director of the Janata Bank, said that Luna was given the new charge in a meeting of its Board of Directors on Wednesday.
She has already joined her new office, Manik said. The Finance Ministry on Sunday in an order appointed former secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon as chairman of the Janata Bank.
The Bangladesh Bank, however, has refused a no-objection for Hedayetullah, but cleared Luna.
Luna also worked as a Director of the state-run Agrani Bank from 2009 to 2012. The software entrepreneur had been the chairman of Dohatec New media and President of Bangladesh Women in Technology.
