Chattogram Bureau :
The water level in Kaptai Lake, the largest artificial reservoir in Bangladesh, has dropped at an unusual rate. As a result, power generation at the Kaptai power plant has declined alarmingly.
At present, only Unit 4 out of 5 units of power station has been kept operational. The remaining 4 units have been shut down. Now 35MW power is being generated from the only operational unit. According to the control room sources of the power plant, according to the rule curve, the water level in Kaptai Lake is expected to be 72 feet mean C level (MSL) on Saturday. But at the moment the water in the lake is 8 feet MSL.
Due to lack of water in the lake, it is not possible to start all the 5 units.
ATM Abdujzah, Executive Engineer of Karnafuli Hydropower Station, has admitted that there is less water in Kaptai Lake. He said the water level in Kaptai Lake was low due to drought, drought and declining depth of the lake.
