Major rivers overflowing: Low-lying areas of Barishal region flooded by tidal water

Most of the major rivers in the southern Barishal region have overflowed and crossing danger level flooding the lowlands, habitats, crop fields, psiculture, shelters of domestic animals, confirmed Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), Barishal office.
They confirmed the water levels are increasing since last 72 hours as the huge rain fall in this region.
Local weather office sources said in last 24-hours more than 32 millimeter rain fall was recorded till 3:00 PM Thursday. Attraction of full and new moon deteriorating the situation.
BWDB sources said major rivers under Barishal division including Kirtankhola river in Barishal city, Meghna, Kalabadar, Arial Kha, Maskata, Burishawr in different points of Barishal, Patuakhali and Bhola, Meghna in Daulatkhan of Bhola, Payra in Mirjaganj of Patuakhali, Bishkhali in Jhalakathi and Barguna and Kacha, Baleshwar in Pirojpur districts already flowing from four to sixty-eight centimeters above danger levels.
Dipak Das, executive engineer of BWDB Barishal district, acknowledged water flows started increasing from early of this week.
As a result agriculture lands, villages, ponds, roads and bazaars have been flooded around two to four feet during high tide in adjacent river areas.
Total 16 out of 17 unions in Mehendiganj upazila of Barisal district have been submerged, confirmed Pijush Chandra Dey, Mehendiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer.
In Barishal, Gournadi and Agoiljhara Upazila many areas adjacent to wet lands (bil) submerged one to two feet under water and vegetable especially betel leaf plantations went under water, confirmed Israt Jahan, Gournadi Upazila UNO.
Due to high tide and over raining the water level of Kirtankhola River has increased crossing 30 centimeter over danger level.
Low lying areas of Barishal city have been flooded including Palashpur, Alekanda, Band Road and Amanatganj area, confirmed local residents.
Most of the 19 slums in Barishal city have been flooded due to high tide and rain, BCC sources confirmed.
Lamchori, Charbaria, Charmonai, Shayestabad under Sadar upazila, Agorpur, Rahamatpur under Babuganj upazila,Sadar, Sreepur, Chargopalpur, Ulania, Kaliganj under Mehendiganj upazila, different areas of Hijla and Muladi upazila of Barishal district affected mostly by recent flash floods.
Besides Dharmaganj River at Hizla flowing 18 centimeter over danger level, Burishwar and Payra Rivers at Mirjaganj point flowing over 64 centimeter, at Amtali point under Barguna district 37 centimeter above danger level, Bishkhali River at Patharghata point 50 centimeter over at Barguna point 57 centimeter over danger level, Tentulia River at Bhola Kheyaghat point flowing 20 centimeter over danger levels.
Various low-lying areas have been submerged by tidal water in the lower part of Bhola including Manpura, Doulatkhan and Charfession upazilas, BWDB sources said.
Dipak Das, executive engineer BWDB said Meghna River at Daulatkhan Point flowing 49 centimeter over the danger line and Nayavangani River 68 centimeter over danger level at Abupur point.
Payra River at Mirjaganj point flowing 7 centimeter over danger level, Kacha River flowing at Pirojpur point 2 centimeter over danger level, Tentulia River at Bhola Kheyghat point flowing 25 centimeter over danger levels.
Besides Bishkhali River at Jhalakathi, Bamna and Patharghata points flowing respectably 15, 22 and 30 centimeter over danger levels, BWDB sources said.
Mohammad Masum, Assistant Engineer, Barisal, said that due to flow of strong current, upstream water pressure and huge raining water levels has of major rivers increased in southern region.
