Solar panels at affordable costs will be offered to electricity deprived people of about 8,000 villages in different districts.
International Finance Corporation (IFC) in collaboration with Germany’s GIZ is helping through a year-long campaign for building awareness about utility and affordability of about 20 products.
IFC officials in Dhaka said the campaign titled “Shurjobati” (Sunlight) is being launched by Lighting Asia
Bangladesh (LAB), a programme to promote solar systems for marketing their products. “One of the major causes of slow progress in expansion of solar system in Bangladesh is the high cost of products. But in this case, the prices of products range from Tk 700 to Tk 22,000 depending on capacity,” Programme Manager Muhammad Taif Ul Islam told journalists.
So far four million people have been brought under coverage of solar power, he pointed out. Almost 90 million people in Bangladesh are living either in the off-grid areas or not getting electricity supply, according to official estimate.
“We will go to the remote villages and also islands where the people need electricity for better life. We are just helping the companies reach people and make it a sustainable practice,” the IFC official said. The programme has fixed a target of reaching 2.5 million people by 2017.
The campaign, ‘Shurjobati’, is being launched in six coastal districts, including Barisal, Barguna, Bagerhat and Chittagong, on 6 December.
