Mintu Abdur Rahman, Rangpur :
The only CT scan machine at Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) has remained out of order for long causing sufferings to the patients.
The CT scan machine went out of order around 8 months ago as its switch stopped functioning, RMCH sources said.
In addition, the hospital’s only MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine has been non-functional since July last year due to wire theft, sources also said.
It is alleged that patients admitted to the hospital are counting extra costs to undergo CT scan and MRI scans at private diagnostic centres outside the hospital. The delay in diagnosis is putting patients’ lives at risk.
Every day, around 40-50 patients are advised to undergo CT scan and MRI, said some employees at the Radiology and Imaging Department of RMCH. The test is very vital, but they cannot render service to the patients, they added.
The costs for CT scan of brain, whole abdomen and chest and abdomen at the hospital are Tk 2,000 to Tk 4,000 while it is Tk 4000 to Tk 8000 in private clinics or diagnostic centres , sources alleged.
Serious patients from neighburing districts such as Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Gaibandha are also referred to the hospital for CT scan and MRI. But due to non-availability of the facilities they have to suffer a lot, sources informed.
Taking advantage of the situation, brokers of the clinics are inducing patients at RMCH to shift to their respective clinics, it is alleged.
