London-Bangla Press Club celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and the UK on Wednesday. In celebration of the occasion, they arranged a discussion meeting in the afternoon at the London Enterprise Academy Auditorium, 81-91, Commercial Road, London.
Anwar Chowdhury, former British High Commissioner in Dhaka, presented the keynote paper while Bangladesh High Commissioner in London Saida Mona Tashnima spoke as the chief guest.
Syed Tosharaf Ali, Editor, Weekly Robbar and a Freedom fighter spoke on the subject as the special guest.
Anwar Chowdhury, in his keynote paper, highlighted the historical development of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and the UK. Bangabandhu laid the foundation of friendship, after meeting with British Prime Minister Edward Heath just after arrival from Pakistan in1972.
He explained the role of the Great Britain as a development partner with facts and figures.
High Commissioner Saida Mona Tashnima spoke elaborately on the subject. She mentioned her in role upholding the interests of Bangladesh in the UK. Bangladesh is a nation state and committed to maintain its progressive character. She said, Bangladesh-UK relationship is based on common goal and values.
Syed Tosharaf Ali said, every relationship demands nourishment. Diplomatic relationship is not an exception. At the same time, we should bear in mind that in the international field weak nation has no friends. So, we have to gather sufficient strength in the economic field and build military power. The Great Britain as an important development partner can help Bangladesh in these regards.
