Entertainment Report :
Country’s one of the most vibrant theatre troupes, Loko Natyadal is going to stage its much acclaimed plays titled Leelaboti Akkhayan and Sonai Madhob at a theatre festival in Kolkata, India.
The audience of Kolkata will enjoy the shows of Leelaboti Akkhayan at two different venues during the festival titled Ganga Jamuna Natya Utsab organised by Kolkata based a theatre troupe, Aneek.
The first show of the play is scheduled to be staged at Niranjan Sadan on December 25, while second show will be brought on the Academy stage on December 26. On December 27, another play Sonai Madhob will be staged.
Written by Nasrin Mustafa and directed by Liaquat Ali Lucky, the play tells the story of Princess Leelaboti, better known as Khona, and how her father in-law Barah envied her. Barah was one of the advisors at Emperor Vikramaditiya’s great court, but he was jealous of his daughter-in-law’s powers of prophesy and skills as a palmist, which eventually led to the princess being wrongly accused and punished with her tongue cut into two.
From then on, she was called Khona, which means split tongue. Time, however, has ensured that Khona’s name has endured, and her statements or Khonar Bachan are still quoted by people in the Indian Sub-continent.
The cast includes Mahfuza Hilali Happy as Leelabati, along with Abu Bakar Bakshi and Esa Al Zami Rahi among others. Set design is by Liaquat Ali Lucky, supported by Thandu Raihan’s lighting and music by M Jinnah.
Since its inception in 1998, Aneek has been organising the international theatre festival titled Ganga Jamuna Natya Utsab, which involves theatre groups from West Bengal, rest of India and other countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, America and Germany.
