Lockdown widened as virus cases spike

A number of houses, places and villages have been put under lockdown afresh in different districts in a desperate move to prevent the transmission of coronavirus.
The districts are: Dhaka, Manikganj, Pabna, Sherpur, Bagerhat and Cumilla.
In Dhaka, two multistoried buildings and a tin-shed house in Mirpur-1 area were put under lockdown on Sunday after two members of a family were found positive for coronavirus.
Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station, said two members of a family, living in the area near Mirpur-1 over bridge, got infected with coronavirus.
The authorities concerned from the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) took them from their house in the morning. Later, the law enforcers went to the spot and put the two buildings with 18-20 families and the tin-shed house in the area under lockdown.
In Manikganj, the local administration has put Singair municipality under lockdown after a man tested positive for coronavirus. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Runa Laila made the announcement at Saturday midnight after learning about the new COVID-19 case. She said the patient, a resident of Nagarkanda upazila of Faridpur, came to Azimpur of the municipality to attend a religious gathering of Tabligh.
A 13-member Tabligh group stayed in the area from March 24. Of them, the person with coronavirus symptoms went to the IEDCR in the capital with a relative where he tested positive.
Meanwhile, the other members of the group, six locals and their family members were sent on home-quarantine.
In Pabna, the local administration locked down a house in Ragabpur of Pabna municipality suspecting a fish trader to be infected with the COVID-19. Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Joynul Abedin confirmed the mater and said his samples would be sent to Rajshahi on Monday for test.
A house in Model Town area of Keraniganj upazila in Dhaka was kept under lockdown after a patient was found infected with the virus, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Keraniganj Amit Deb Nath.
In Sherpur, Sreebardi municipality area and Lasmanpur area of Sadar upazila were put under lockdown after two women were found positive for coronavirus, said Civil Surgeon AKM Anowarullah Rouf.
The duo has been kept at the isolation ward of Sadar Hospital, he said.
In Bagerhat, local leader of Jamaat-e-Islami suffering from fever and cold died in Rampal upazila here on Sunday. Tushar Kumar Paul, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Rampal upazila, said the local administration has kept two villages-Borni and Srifaltala-in the upazila and the surrounding areas of the house of the deceased under observation. On Sunday, Sheikh Naser fell sick and died before he was taken to the emergency unit of Khulna Medical College Hospital from a private hospital in Khulna.
In Cumilla, a farmer suffering from cold, cough, fever and respiratory problems died at Chakratala village in Daudkandi upazila on Sunday morning, nine hours after his house was put under lockdown.
The deceased was identified as Alek Khan, 55. Dr Md Shahinur Alam Sujon of Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex said Alek was admitted to the health complex with cold, cough, fever and respiratory problems around five days ago. Another person died from coronavirus and 18 more people tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours till Sunday morning, said Health Minister Zahid Maleque.
“The death toll from the virus infection is now nine. Eighteen more people were tested positive for coronavirus in the last 24hours, raising the number of cases to 88,” he said in an online briefing.
