speakers at a discussion here on Wednesday mentioned the role of Local Government Institutions (LGIs) especially Union Parishad (UP) and its people is very important towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
They viewed UP is mandated for ensuring effective public service delivery at the grass-root level. All LGIs people should give their full efforts and commitments as a team to strengthen the capacity, ensure transparency and accountability in their respective Ups.
The observation came in a daylong workshop styled “Best Practices, Innovation and Learnings and Role of LGIs to Achieve SDGs” held at circuit house in Rajshahi on Thursday.
Commissioner office of Rajshahi division and Union Parishad Governance Project(UPGP) jointly organized the workshop sharing and documenting all the innovative works, learnings, best practices and achievements of UPs in the division.
Senior Secretary to Ministry of Public Administration Dr Mozammel Haque Khan addressed the workshop as chief guest with Divisional Commissioner Noor-Ur-Rahman in the chair.
Additional Commissioner Aminul Islam, Divisional Director of Local Government Division Shayam Kishore and Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Kazi Ashraf Uddin also spoke.
Chief Guest Dr Mozammel Haque said main motto of the SDGs is to leaving no one behind. “Bangladesh has become a role model for developing world. We have many successes in achieving MDGs and we want to continue it through achieving SDGs.”
“The government has already aligned the global goals and targets with its 7th Five-Year Plan and we have already started our work to reach the goals”, he added.
Dr Mozammel Khan said all the existing services being delivered towards the grassroots people need to be more coordinated and accelerated.
He stressed on providing training on tax assessment and collection, open budget,financial management and record keeping, participatory planning and budgeting, roles and responsibilities of UPs and standing committees and creating strategic planning.
An open discussion was also held there regarding innovative idea, implementation challenges, projects success and achievements and how to strengthen UP. All the participants shared their views on how to attain the cherished goals.
