Anisul Islam Noor :Local firm S. Alam Group is going to install two coal power plants in Chittagong with two Chinese farms. Each of the power plant with 612MW capacity (612× 2= 1212MW) is the biggest investment in the private sector so far in the country. Tk 25000/- crore will be spent to build the power plants.An agreement in this regard was signed between S. Alam Group and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) in Bidyut Bhaban on Tuesday. Mazharul Haque, Secretary of BPDB, and Mohammad Saiful Alam, Chairman SS Power Ltd, a concern of S. Alam Group, signed the agreement on behalf of respective side.The country’s private sector has achieved significance progress in installing small power plant and now they dare invest in coal based big power plant, said Prime Minister’s Adviser to Power Energy and Mineral Resources Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi BB.Addressing as Chief Guest in the deal signing ceremony, he said, some private farms may not come to invest in power generation, but others will show their interest.Installation a coal based power plant of requires a big investment. If eight power plants out of 10 are in private sector, it will be a big success for government, Tawfiq Elahi said. Additional Seceretary of Power Ministry Dr Ahmad Kaikaus presided at the function. Former BPDB Chairman and Adviser of SS Power Ltd ASM Alamgir Kabir, Chairman of S. Alam Group Saiful Islam, Vice-Chairman Abdus Samad, Executive President of SEPCO III Zung Hungsho, among others, spoke in the function.Local bank will not be affected by the investment of Tk25000 crore as source 70 percent of money will be different Chinese Banks and Alam group.BPDB will purchase electricity at Tk 6.6 (8.259 US cents) per unit for the period of 25 years. The share ratios of the SS power plants are: S. Alam Steel Ltd 10 percent (pc), S.A Cement 10 pc, S. A Super Edible Oil Ltd 10 pc, S.A Vegetable Oil Ltd 10 pc, Genesis Textile Accessories and Apparels Ltd 10 pc, Sonali Cargo Logistics (pvt) Ltd 20 pc, SEPCO III Electric Power Construction Corporation (China) 20 pc, HTG Development Group Co. Ltd 10 pc.The sponsor company will import coal to generate power in both the power plants. About 1200 tonnes of coal will be consumed in these plants to generate 1220 MW electricity. Super Critical Technology will be used in these power plants which technology is best environment friendly so far use technology.
