Local company to build capital’s MRT station

Some 14 trains to be operated in 3 minutes, while 60,000 passengers carried in an hour from both directions

A local company in the country is now going to construct Dhaka Mass-Rapid Transit (MRT) stations as it has gained capability to participate in international tenders.
According to Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), there are 16 stations, including Uttara North, Uttara Center, Uttara South, Pallabi, Mirpur 11, Mirpur 10, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Agargaon, Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Shahbag, Dhaka University, Bangladesh Secretariat and Motijheel in the city.
The authorities concerned of DMTCL have already distributed work order to the local company through international tender for constructing 12 stations, while distribution of work order against four more stations is now under process.
Different local and international organisations have participated in the tenders. Some other local companies are hopeful to get the work order of the rest stations on the basis of priority.
Syed Feroz Ahmed, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of McDonald Group that received the work order said, it’s a sign of development in our country as the local company is now constructing international standard infrastructures.
He said, a number of prominent international companies also took part in the bidding to get the work. But, local company has got the work order by fulfilling all kinds of requirements.
“We are going to construct this infrastructure trial based. If we are succeeded, we will take high ranged work in future,” he added.
The company hired a number of foreign experts from different countries, including Japan, Philippines, Thailand and India for different purposes like design and fabricating. A number of engineers have taken training from JV Nippon Steel, he also said.
The CEO of McDonald said, their company has established a new factory for the MRT project. It has also imported advanced machineries like heavy-duty profile bending machine for accurate pipe bending and heavy duty 3D pipe cutting machine for accurate 3D Pipe Cutting from Europe.
The factory shed has been consisted with some modern machines. The total area has been divided into four parts to facilitate the process.
According to DMTCL, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has allocated Tk 165.95 billion, while the government exchequer sanctioned Tk 53.90 billion for the site.
JICA sources said, some 14 trains will be operated every three minutes, while 60,000 passengers to be carried in an hour from the both directions.
The estimated time to travel around 20km distance from North end of Uttara to Motijheel will be 35 minutes. Each train will contain six compartments with air-condition.
