Local admin`s negligence behind B`baria attacks: NHRC chief

Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh Kazi Reazul Hoque on Thursday said negligence, indifference and lack of prudence of the local administration were the reasons behind attacks on Hindu temples and houses in Brahmanbaria. “They can’t avoid their responsibility for the losses caused by the
attacks,” the NHRC chief told a press briefing in its head office following a report submitted by a three-member probe committee formed by the commission. Earlier on Wednesday, the committee visited Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria following the attacks on Hindu temples, houses over a Facebook post.
On Sunday, around 150-200 people desecrated at least five temples and ransacked about a hundred houses at Haripur union of Nasirnagar upazila in Brahmanbaria on Sunday allegedly over a Facebook post demeaning the holy Kaaba.
Two cases were filed against 1,200 unnamed people with the local police station in connection with the incident.
