The supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the national grid will begin from first week of July this year.
The process was scheduled to begin last month, which was later postponed due to a technical glitch. A ship carring the LNG from Qatar has already delivered it to the Moheskhali regasification terminal.
Managing Director of Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL) Md Kamruzzaman told The New Nation yesterday “We have targeted to supply NLG to the national grid on July 4, if the situation remain favorable; it could be even begin earlier,” RPGCL, a wing of Petrobangla, is supervising the import of LNG and its regasification.
According to officials of Petrobangla and Energy Division, initially around 350 mmcfd LNG will be added to the national grid for distribution in the Chattogram region.
The officials said the government began the process of LNG import in 2010. Following the road map a floating terminal, which will be used to store imported LNG and for regasification, reached Maheshkhali on 24 April this year.
Transfer of LNG to the national grid was delayed due to a technical glitch, found while linking the terminal with a pipeline under the sea water. The glitch was fixed on Tuesday and the last hurdle to put LNG to national grid seems to have been over, officials said.
“Addition of 350mmcfd of LNG to the national grid, is not enough to meet the industrial demand of gas in Chattragram region and beyond which is facing a the deficit supply of around 1000 mmcfd. More LNG will be imported soon to be transferred to national grid in phases, Md Kamruzzaman said.
