Dhaka North City Corporation will operate mobile courts from today against its contractors who are storing debris and construction materials beside the roads violating Road Digging Policy 2019. The decision came up at an inter-ministerial meeting for controlling air pollution at the Local Government and Rural Development Ministry on Thursday where DNCC mayor expressed his determination to attend the mobile court drives regularly. It is widely alleged that the contractors are causing public suffering and polluting the air by haphazardly storing construction materials on the roads month after month. We think DNCC mayor’s promise in this regard is very time-befitting when air pollution in the capital has reached at its highest extent. It is learnt that actions would also be taken against the contractors who are working for some mega projects, including Metro Rail, Elevated Expressway, Water Supply and Sewerage Authority and others; responsible for road diggings.
Newspaper reports said that Gazipur mayor, DSCC authority and Narayanganj City Corporation officials did not give any commitment despite the LGRD minister, who chaired the meeting, directed all the four city corporations and Department of Environment for taking actions against agencies and individuals responsible for polluting air in the capital and its adjacent areas. Air quality in country’s all the major cities including, Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna and Rajshahi has been found unhealthy. In particular, Dhaka ranks top among the worst polluted cities across the globe.
It is hopeless to expect from the government to have the controlling power to improve the hazardous unhealthy conditions of living in Dhaka. The living conditions are worsening due to position of no government. The City Corporations and other authorities are also sitting idle.
The minister and others of the government are too anxious to praise Bangabandhu and the prime minister only to keep their moral high. It can be said that the people around the government are so incompetent that even if they try to do better they have other problems. Nobody has the power to disobey them.
The government is of the view that big construction objects will pass as great success. This typical bureaucratic idea is for deceiving the people and also denying their needs.
The government appears to be sure that the people are helpless and satisfying personal greed of their own men for their muscle power is what matters most.
