DEATH tragedies could not be avoided on Eid goers journey despite repeated call on the government and transport owners and operators to handle the long distance trips to their destinations with utmost care. Road accidents have taken a heavy toll of human lives with more than 50 people killed across the country from last Thursday to Sunday, in addition to a high number of injured. Needless to say poor maintenance of roads and highways, faulty vehicles, half-trained drivers and failure of police to be active about safety were mainly responsible for the tragedies.
At least 18 people were killed on Saturday including six members of a family when 29 others were injured in separate road accidents in six districts. On Wednesday, 15 more including six women were killed and 11 others in road accidents. Several others were killed and more than 20 injured in sporadic accidents across the country till Sunday. Sadly enough, most such accidents could be averted if police took their responsibility seriously. High sounding expressions are used to tell the general public that there will high alertness to see that journeys are safe. But no care is shown to avoid accidents and save lives.
In fact, passengers whose lives face the danger do not have any say in such matters. All that they can do in their frantic move to reach home is to buy tickets paying several times the normal fare and pray for their safety. Unfortunately many of them lose lives or get injured. There is no accountability, no trial of reckless drivers.
However much of it could be minimized if mad rush driving and overloading could be stopped. But police and especially the highway police remained indifferent and they are to be found inactive after the tragedies had struck.
We really do not know how long people can live and die helpless as there is no one in the government to try to be responsive. It is unbelievable that there is nobody to ensure accountability of public servants. Lives of the general public have no importance to the government and the public grievances in every aspect go unheard.
