Literacy rate increases by 21pc in last decade

State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Md Zakir Hossen said literacy rate increased by 21 percent in the last decade due to the government’s relentless efforts.
Besides, the government has helped 50 lakh illiterate people above 15 years achieve fundamental literacy and given skill development training to five lakh youths and elderly people between 15 and 45 years old, he said.
The state minister said this on Sunday while addressing a discussion marking the International Literacy Day at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy auditorium at Sengunbagicha here.
Zakir said at present the government is cooperating with 45 lakh illiterate people between 15 and 45 years old in 250 upazilas to acquire literacy.
He said the government has formulated the 7th five-year plan to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
A total of 500 ICT based permanent community learning centers have been set up across the country while 64 livelihood skills development training centres were set up in 64 districts, he added.
Primary and Mass Education Secretary Md Akram-Al-Hossain chaired the function while Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Primary and Mass Education Mostafizur Rahman and Director General of Bureau of Non-Formal Education Tapan Kumar Ghosh, addressed the function.
