Litchi, a popular summer fruit, has started appearing in the city markets. The early variety of litchi is available in small quantity and that is why the price is sumptuous.
Every bunch of 100 litchis is being sold at Tk 700 to Tk 800 based on quality and size. Yet, the rich people are purchasing the fruit despite the high price.
It is alleged that carbide chemicals and growth hormones are used for ripening litchi and other fruits. Chemicals mixed fruits are injurious to health, still many consumers
overlook it. Chandi Das Kunda, Deputy Director of Bogra DAE, said, litchi is abundantly grown in Rajshahi and Dinajpur districts. Many farmers are producing improved varieties of litchi there and it is becoming more popular across the country.
He said, commercial farming of some of the fruits, especially mango and litchi, are gradually expanding in the region.
According to the officials of Department of Horticulture, litchi is being produced on 2,500 hectares of land this year. There are 3,000 litchi orchards in Dinajpur. The production target was 4,500 tonnes, which might not be achieved.
Varieties of litchi, including Bombay, Madrazi, China-3 and Bedana, are grown in Dinajpur. These are famous for its size and test, said the farmers.
Only one major variety of litchi named Madrazi has appeared in the markets that have attracted the consumers. Other variety will arrive in the market soon.
