UNB, Dhaka :
A list of executive engineers (EXENs) of LGED whose spouses and children are not living with them at district headquarters is being prepared, said LGRD Minister Md Tazul Islam on Thursday.
“Those who’re living without families need not to be posted there. If we could accommodate them in Dhaka, we can deploy them here,” he said.
He said, this while addressing a progamme marking the launching of a study report titled “State of Social Accountability and Deliberative Democracy in
Bangladesh: Current Dynamics and Future Pathway” of Brac University at Brac Inn auditorium in the city.
Minister Tazul said it has been observed that the quality and standard of schools, colleges and other educational institutions of a district are not monitored and maintained properly where the children of DCs, SPs and other top government officials are not studying.
So, he said, the government wants to make sure that the children and spouses are living with the district-level top officials.
The function was also addressed by Resheda K Chowdhury, executive director of Campaign for Popular Education and former caretaker government adviser, Shaheen Anam, executive director of Manusher Jonno Foundation, Dr Badiul Alam Majumder, country director of Hunger Project, and Anwarul Haq, Social Development Adviser of DFID.
Dr Imran Matin, executive director of the Brac Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD), delivered the welcome address while Dr Mirza M Hassan, senior research fellow and head of Governance and Politics Cluster, BIGD, revealed the study report.
The minister said local government bodies have to be strengthened as 112 kinds of services are being provided to people through a number of institutions.
He said his ministry will not allow the mayors of those municipalities to go abroad on tour programme where employees are not getting salaries.
Rasheda K Chowdhury said the government should work together with civil society representatives for the betterment of Bangladesh.
Shaheen Anam said negligence in discharging duty has been a culture in the country and the responsible people love to show off their strength. “But people have the right to receive the services from government agencies while executives are responsible to deliver that.”
