Link rural community in mainstream economy to attain SDG

Business leaders have underscored the need for linking rural community with the mainstream economy with a view to attaining Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) by 2030.
 The set 17 objectives of the SDG are aimed at ending poverty, fighting inequality and injustice, and tackling climate change during the period, they said while addressing a seminar on “Transition from MDG to SDG: Opportunities and Challenges for Industry and Business” in conference room of the DCCI in the city on Saturday.
“Bangladeshi entrepreneurs are resilient enough and they are moving the country ahead. We have to be self-reliant for achieving the target and government is in all the way committed to facilitate the private sector,” said State Minister for Finance and Planning M A Mannan while addressing the seminar as the chief guest.
The minister also stressed the importance of skilled workforce for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). “In case of Millennium Development Goal (MDG), Bangladesh has done well, and if we work collectively, SDG will also be achieved,” Mannan hoped.
Executive Director of Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh (PRI) Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur presented the keynote paper in the seminar, organized by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
 DCCI President Hossain Khaled said, out of 17 goals of the SDG, 7 goals are directly linked with business. He called for infrastructure development, power and energy security, skill development, technology adaptation, policy framework, long term strategy for attaining SDG.
Khaled also called for ensuring easy financing for the SMEs as it is the main driving force of our economy. He called for establishing a ‘National Implementation Forum’ which will be a single platform consisting of public and private sector representatives along with all stakeholders for monitoring implementation process of SDG initiatives.
PRI Executive Director Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur in his keynote paper said that the private sector played a leading role as the driver of economic activities. He said, industrial sector growth was 7.8 per cent from the year 2000 to 2014.
For achieving SDG, he urged for adequate infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization through innovation. He said energy outlook for Bangladesh and plan for reliance in coal in future will be a major challenge for us.
“Unplanned urbanization will also be a challenge we need to address now. SDG forecasts 7 per cent per cent GDP for LDC countries which is an opportunity for Bangladesh as the country is very close to attain the target,” said Dr. Mansur.
Assistant Country Director, UNDP-Bangladesh Palash Kanti Das called upon the private sector to work with the public sector to attain the target of SDG.
Director General of Bangladesh Institute Development Studies (BIDS) Dr. Khan Ahmed Sayeed Murshid said that quality education, rule of law, and agriculture development are some key priorities to achieve the SDG.
Chairman of Business Initiative Leading Development (BUILD) Asif Ibrahim urged for investment in infrastructure development with public private partnership initiative. He called upon all to make best use of remittance and foreign exchange reserve by investing in industry. He urged the government to stimulate SME entrepreneurship and promote them with adequate financing. He also urged to coincide the 7th Five-Year Plan with SDG.
DCCI Senior Vice-President Humayun Rashid and Vice-President Md. Shoaib Choudhury were present in the seminar.
