UNB, Dhaka :
Experts at a discussion here on Wednesday said the outcome of the 20th Conference of Parties (COP 20) held recently in Lima, Peru have disappointed Bangladesh and other developing countries as it failed to deal adequately with adaptation, losses and damage caused by climate change.
They said, there is no scope for further frustration on the next climate deal to be held in December 2015 in Paris, France.
Three organisations-ActionAid Bangladesh, Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS), and International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD)- jointly arranged the discussion on the outcomes of Lima COP20 and duties of Bangladesh for the next conference’ at Daily Star Bhaban in the city.
Chaired by BCAS Executive Director Dr Atiq Rahman, the event was addressed by ICCCAD director and lead author of the IPCC 5th Assessment Report on Adaptation Dr Saleemul Huq, ActionAid Bangladesh Country Director Farah Kabir and BCAS fellow Golam Rabbani.
They said civil society organisations in Bangladesh must engage in a dialogue with
other civil society organisations across the world and convey the message that Bangladesh will not accept any unjust and inequitable deal, rather Bangladesh will hold accountable the people of the rich countries for not putting pressure on their governments.
They said, it is important for the Bangladesh media to connect with the international media to share stories of sufferings and resilience on the issue.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Atiq Rahman said there must not be any scope for further disappointment on climate deal in Paris. “We’ve been expecting that the world leaders will understand the urgency and will listen to the demand of the people living in poverty across the world. But, since Copenhagen, we are being denied of an equitable deal.”
