Eight people were killed in separate incidents of lightning strike in Kishoreganj, Moulvibazar, Rajbari and Khulna districts on Sunday.
In Kishoreganj, three people, including two siblings, were killed as they were struck by a streak of lightning in Katiadi and Itna upazilas in the morning. The deceased were identified as Manjil, 25, and his brother Ratan,
27, residents of Sakua village in Karimganj upazila, and Amin, 22, a resident of Katiadi upazila. Officer-in-charge of Itna Police Station Abdul Malek said a thunderbolt hit Manjil and Ratan while they were working in a paddy field during a storm at Shimulbagh haor in Itna upazila at about 9:30 am, killing them on the spot.
Meanwhile, Amin was killed as a thunderbolt struck him while working also in a paddy field during the storm in Katiadi upazila at about 10:00 am. In Moulvibazar, two members of a family were killed in a lightning strike at West Hazipur village in Kulaura upazila in the morning. The deceased were identified as Dulu Bibi, 53, and her daughter-in-law Suifa Bibi, 30, of the village. Locals said the thunderbolt struck Dulu Bibi and Suifa Bibi amid a drizzling around 7:30 am while they were staying at their house, leaving them dead on the spot.
Hazipur union parishad chairman Mahmud Ali confirmed the incident. In Rajbari, Amena Khatun, 50, and her grandchild Shanta, 11, were killed in a lightening strike at Mahishbatan village in Sadar upazila in the evening.
In Khulna, Nishit Mondal, 28, was killed and his cousin Hiran Mondal and Bashanti Mondal were injured as they were hit by a thunderbolt in Koyra upazila in the afternoon.
