Lighter vessel capsizes with 1,100 tonnes of coal in Bay

A lighter vessel with 12 crew members onboard capsized in Bay of Bengal, near Sangu Gas Field in Chittagong on Thursday morning.
The vessel was transporting 1,100 tons of coal on its way to Dhaka after loading coal from a mother vessel at the outer anchorage of the port,
our Chattogram correspondent reports.
The vessel was moving around 2.5miles away from the designated route and was in the sea when signal 3 was being hoisted near the port.
Heraparbat 8, the vessel, capsized 20km from the Karnaphuli estuary. Ataul Kabir, Joint Secretary of Water Transport Cell (WTC), said.
All 12 crew members of the ship were rescued by nearby boatmen, Nabi Alam, General Secretary of Bangladesh Lighterage Workers Union said.
Bangladesh Navy has done the successful rescue work so far. The vessel capsized due to the strong currents in the sea because of the rough weather, Md Omar Faruque, Port Secretary told The New Nation.
