The life expectancy at birth in the country has increased on average by 0.64 years annually over the last five years reaching 70.4 years in both sexes in 2013 from 67.2 years in 2009.
Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) revealed this while unveiling the cover of a report on Sample Vital Registration System (SVRS) 2013 held at the BBS auditorium on Tuesday afternoon.
Statistics and Informatics Division (SID) Secretary Kaniz Fatema spoke as the chief guest at the programme held with BBS Director General Mohammad Abdul Wazed.
SID Additional Secretaries M Shafiqul Islam and MA Mannan Howlader, BBS Deputy Director General Md Baitul Amin Bhuiyan spoke on the occasion as special guests. Sample Vital Registration System (SVRS) Project Director AKM Ashraful Haque made a power point presentation on the highlights of the report.
