Life expectancy at birth increases to 72 years

Life expectancy at birth in the country increased to 72 years for both male and female in 2017 from 71.6 years in 2016.
According to a survey report titled Bangladesh Sample Vital Statistics 2017, by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), life expectancy for females rose to 73.5 years in 2017 from 72.9 in 2016. Life expectancy for males increased to 70.6 in 2017 from 70.3 in 2016.
The report was published at a function held recently at BBS office in capital’s Agargaon, with Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal as the chief guest.
Presided over by BBS Director General Md. Amir Hossain, the publication ceremony was also addressed by State Minister for Finance M. A. Mannan and BBS Secretary in-charge Saurendra Nath Chakrabhartty, among others. “The present government is doing a very good job in all the sectors and we are continuing to achieve many things.
If the country continues to make progress at the current pace, it will turn into a developed country by 2041,” Kamal said.
According to the report, maternal mortality ratio per 1000 live births went down to 1.72 in 2017 from 1.78 in 2016. For rural areas, the ratio is 1.82 in 2017 compared to 1.90 in 2016, while in urban areas the ratio is 1.57 in 2017 compared to 1.60 in 2016.
