LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain yesterday directed the city corporations, municipalities and other authorities concerned to clean up wastes of sacrificial animals within 48 hours during the holy Eid-ul-Azha.
He issued the directive at a function in the meeting room of the Local Government Division to handover dumper trucks to mayors of municipalities to facilitate a proper wastes management. Seventy-eight municipalities were given dumper trucks under the supervision of the local government ministry.
Presided over by Local Government Secretary Abdul Malek, the function was also addressed by Dhamrai Municipality Mayor Golam Kabir. Mayors from 25 municipalities around Dhaka were present at the function.
The minister said more trucks would be supplied to the municipalities to keep the towns clean.
Referring to the right of municipalities to impose taxes, he asked the mayors to think about increasing taxes and the area of taxes. The government cannot bear their expenditures forever, he said and added that the municipalities would have to be self-reliant in future. The minister asked the mayors to develop pollution-free and environment friendly towns by disposing of wastes along with ensuring other services.
Besides social development, the government has undertaken programmes for infrastructure development in municipalities, he added. In the function, the minister handed over keys of the dumper trucks to the mayors.
