LGED workshop held

An orientation workshop on Third Urban Governance and Infrastructure Improvement Project (UGIIP-III ) was held at LGED headquarters at Agargaon in the city on Tuesday.
 Local Government Division Secretary Abdul Malek was present as chief guest while Additional Secretary (Urban) of the same Division Ashoke Madhab Roy was present as special guest, says a press release.
Among others present in the workshop were Public Health Engineering Department Chief Engineer Ms. Khaleda Ahsan, Urban Specialist of ADB Norio Saito and Project Director Md. Shafiqul Islam Akand. LGED Chief Engineer Shyama Prosad Adhikari was in the Chair.
As Chief Guest Local Government Division Secretary Abdul Malek said that the foundation of urbanization was made in 150 years back and now the country has 11 City Corporations and 324 Paurashavas. He also said that the country is moving ahead under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. After enactment of Local Government Act in 2009, transparency and accountability of this sector is ensured and the country would enter into middle income group by 2021.
In his inaugural speech, Md. Shafiqul Islam Akand said that the project would be implemented in 31 Pourashavas in between 2014 to 2020 at the cost of Tk 2600.48 crores. He also said that the project would definitely help to reduce the poverty level and to establish good governance in those areas.
