Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has implemented 2565 schemes by spending Taka 1201.87 crore in eight districts under Rajshahi division during the last 2015-16 fiscal , officials concerned here said.
The districts, where the development projects were implemented, are Rajshahi, Chapainawbganj, Naogaon, Natore, Pabna, Sirajganj, Bogra and Joypurhat, said Ali Ahmed, Additional Chief Engineer of LGED, here on Thursday.
A total of 1071 kilometers of new roads were constructed and 1004 kilometer others were repaired with an estimated cost of Taka 852.51 crore. Some 94 bridge and culverts with total length of 3703 meters were also constructed by spending Taka 217.38 crore.
The rural level improved infrastructures have already started reducing transport cost, improving marketing system, increasing production and marketing facilities of agricultural products which are contributing a lot to socio-economic development of the project area.
Roadside tree plantation activities on the improved roads are progressing successfully that will ultimately help reduce carbon emission at a substantial level and that is very important to face the adverse impact of climate change in the vast Barind tract.
Thirty-five growth centers were built at a cost of Taka 19.64 crore. Improvement of the physical facilities of rural markets will ensure fair price of agricultural products and thereby provide incentives to increase agricultural production, assist enhancement of rural economic and commercial activities.
For infrastructure improvement, renovation and maintenance of primary schools, 133 schemes were implemented costing Taka 45 crore. Eighty eight primary school buildings were reconstructed while 35 others were repaired.
The schemes were undertaken to increase the national literacy rate through enhancing education facilities at the schools located in remote villages, the sources said.
Buildings of 31 Union and Upazila Parishads were constructed. Implementation of these schemes would in fact further strengthen the overall activities of local government bodies at the grassroots level.
To enhance the participatory micro water resource sector for irrigation, 58 schemes were implemented at an estimated cost of Taka 42.18 crore.
In addition to implementation of 124 housing schemes for the landless and distressed Freedom Fighters by spending Taka 11.64 crore, 22 Upazila Freedom Fighters Complex buildings were constructed at total cost of Taka 97.16 crore. Three memorial plaques of war of liberation were constructed.
Employment generation schemes for 5,109 distressed women were also implemented through spending Taka 39.22 crore.
Engineer Ali Ahmed said that the implemented projects have started contributing enormously to raising standard of living in the remote villages.
