“Mitigating problems at the remote places of the country through LGED’s development programmes is helping our women to progress ahead,” Minister for Agriculture Begum Motia Chowdhury said this while she was giving award for outstanding self-reliant women held at LGED Bhaban in the city on Wednesday.
The award-giving ceremony was attended by Monzur Hossain, Senior Secretary, Local Government Division, as special guest and Narayanganj Mayor Dr Begum Selina Hayat Ivy, as honourable guest.
Besides, Md Abul Kalam Azad, Additional Chief Engineer (Implementation) and President of LGED Gender & Development Forum, other senior Engineers and Project Directors of LGED, representatives from different development partners, the award-winning women, and representatives from award-winning City Corporation, Municipality and Union Parishads. Md Wahidur Rahman, Chief Engineer of LGED presided over the function.
The Minister further said, retrogression still exists in our society. It is even said today that girls need not be educated beyond class four. Those who say so, are not less in number. She added, there exists progression as well in our society, but we have to go ahead keeping in mind retrogression. She further said, susceptible attitude of men is essential in this respect. Finally, she hopefully said, we would be able to establish gender equality shattering all superstition-ridden impediments.
It is to be mentioned here that as many as 110 women have been able to be marked as outstanding self-reliant women through their participation in LGED’s different development programmes. Nine of them have been selected for the three sectors of LGED, namely Rural Sector, Water Resources Sector and Urban Sector.
 The winners are – in Rural Sector, First Prize Mosammat Anwara Begum (Sunamganj district), Second Prize Mosammat Mahinoor Begum (Patuakhali district) and Third Prize Sreemati Shandya Rani (Lalmonirhat).
 In Water Resources Sector – First Prize Sreemati Madhura Jong (Mymensingh district), Second Prize Mosammat Zarina Akhtar (Mymensingh district) and Third Prize Sreemati Sudevi Mondal (Gopalganj district). In Urban Sector – First Prize Mosammat Roxana Parveen (Bogra Pourshava), Second Prize Mosammat Sahera Banu (Panba Pourashava) and Third Prize Sreemati Etirani Sheel (Brahmanbaria Pourashava). Besides, one City Corporation, one Municipality and two Union Parishads have also been awarded for successfully implementing gender programmes.
Md. Wahidur Rahman, Chief Engineer, LGED, however made an impromptu announcement that the three first prize winners and the two Chairmen of the award-winning Union Parishads will soon be sent abroad for training.
