LGED developing 3,000-km roads in Rajshahi Division

Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has been developing around 3,000-kilometer roads alongside constructing 1.7-km culverts and 1.53-km bridges for improving living and livelihood condition of rural people in eight districts under Rajshahi division.
Works of the rural level road development infrastructures being implemented are expected to be completed within next couple of years, said Abdul Maleque Sarker, Additional Chief Engineer of LGED.
Renovation and maintenance works of 308.5-kilometer roads are also progressing fast at present in the districts of Rajshahi, Chapainawbganj, Naogaon, Natore, Pabna, Sirajganj, Bogra and Joypurhat.
Roadside tree plantation activities on the improved roads are progressing successfully that will ultimately help reduce carbon emission at a substantial level and that is very important to face the adverse impact of climate change in the vast Barind tract.
He said implementation works of 22 projects including the development and renovation of roads, bridges and culverts are going on in these districts involving around Taka 7,221.53 crore aimed at improving rural accessibility, enhancing sustainability of rural transport and market services.
Construction works of 79 Union Parishad and 21 Upazila Parishad Complexes and 70 land office buildings are going on at a cost of Taka 426.35 crore side by side with renovation and maintenance of 960 mosques, Eidgahs and temples.
Construction works of 48 Upazila Freedom Fighter Complex buildings, 21 Liberation War Memorial Museum along with conservation of historic installation of war of liberation and conservation and reconstruction of five liberation war installations are underway.
“We are re-excavating 90.50-kilometer canal to enhance the participatory small-scale water resource sector for irrigation”, Engineer Maleque Sarker added.
The rural level improved infrastructures have already started reducing transport cost, improving marketing system, increasing production and marketing facilities of agricultural products which are contributing a lot to socio-economic development.
Engineer Maleque said the ongoing projects are expected to be completed by June, 2021 to June, 2022 in phases. The improved transportation network will facilitate reducing the transportation cost and creating marketing facility of the produce.
The projects will contribute enormously to raising standard of living and livelihood condition in the remote villages as improvement of rural roads, bridges, culverts and other Infrastructure is very important to attain the cherished goal, said Nur-Ur-Rahman, Commissioner of Rajshahi division.
