BSS, Dhaka :
The labour union of one of South Korea’s largest electronics companies, LG Electronics Inc., and ICDDRB have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide $95,000 to enhance patient care in its Dhaka hospital.
At a special event at ICDDRB here Monday, Vice-Chairman of LG Electronics Inc. Labour Union Headquarters Mr Sang-Geol Lee signed the MoU with ICDDR,B’s Executive Director Professor John D. Clemens committing the generous donation.
Locally known as ‘The Cholera Hospital’, it provides free-of- charge care to around 120,000 patients a year suffering from diarrhoeal diseases. The majority of patients are children under five years of age.
The donation from the LG Electronics Inc. will enable ICDDRB to improve its hospital facilities and provide treatment to approximately 1,200 patients over the next four months.
The donation handover ceremony marked the launch of a partnership between the South Korean corporate giant and the globally renowned research institute in Bangladesh.
During the ceremony, Labour Union Headquarters Vice Chairman Mr Sang-Geol Lee said the LG employees carefully save their money through the “Bank of Love” to use it all over the world, where necessary. In 2014, he said, we have decided to utilize this fund in Bangladesh.
Addressing the function as the chief guest, South Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh Mr. Lee Yun Young spoke highly about the partnership and said Korea is supporting Bangladesh in rural and agricultural development, ICT and in reducing climate change impacts.
Appreciating Bangladesh’s growth and performance in the socio-economic development and achieving MDGs, Mr Lee hoped that this country could follow his country’s model of development, as Korea once an aid recipient developing country, achieved its remarkable progress through proper utilization of its human capital, foreign assistance and other resources.
“We are very excited at this new partnership,” ICDDRB Executive Director Professor John D. Clemens said adding, it is a fine example of how corporate social responsibility can support the type of public health services that we provide at the Dhaka Hospital.
“We look forward to a long-term relationship with LG, and through them with the people of South Korea,” he also said.
LG Union headquarters Chief Secretary Sung-Kyu Kim along with his colleagues Gi-Hak Kim, Yong-Sun Lee, Jong-Tae Lee, Jung- Jong You, Jin-Seong Kim, Chang-Ok Kim and LG Electronics Inc. Headquarters Labor Relations Team Manager Mr Jin-Ho Kim, among others, were present on the occasion.
